Sharding is a method for dividing the whole blockchain history into many parts so that each full node does not need to store the entire copy of it.
If every Node is expected to carry the complete blockchain, then the speed of the network will begin to slow down as the blockchains become bigger.
This is one of the reasons why this is regarded as an amplification for said blockchains.
